Imara Ballerina follows a young Black ballerina learning to embrace herself fully, gaining confidence and a sense of belonging within her world of dance. The story highlights self-love and representation in ballet.

Written by Zoe Oli, the young CEO of Beautiful Curly Me, Imara Ballerina was created to encourage girls to see themselves reflected in the stories they read and to dream boldly without limitations.

Design Process

This section includes the original storyboard, an early draft of Imara’s story. The utilization of storyboards in my process assisted in constructing the flow of the story, test pacing and indentify any structural flaws.

  • Worked closely with the BCM team to align on vision through ongoing communication and feedback

  • Developed multiple iterations of sketches and refinements leading to final approved illustrations

  • Managed files, versions, and deadlines independently throughout the project

  • Built and finalized the book layout in Adobe InDesign for production-ready delivery
